Data Stewardship Wizard

Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW) is an online tool, that helps researchers create data management plans (DMPs) It was created as an open-source platform within the ELIXIR project and is free to use. Creating a data management plan that meets the standards of funders or project conditions may not be easy from the start.

The tool intuitively guides researchers through the creation of a DMP in accordance with the FAIR and Open Science principles. DSW enables researchers to easily create a project, answer understandable questionnaire questions, and create a complete data management plan that can be directly attached to an interim report or project proposal.

Discipline-specific data management plan for MENDELU researchers

The MENDELU Data Stewardship Wizard offers discipline-specific Knowledge Models (KMs) that make it easier to create a Data Management Plan (DMP) tailored to the nature of your research. A KM is a structured set of questions and recommendations that guides you step by step through the process of creating a Data Management Plan in the online Data Stewardship Wizard tool.

When creating a new project, you can choose:

  • MENDELU Life Sciences - for research in the natural, agricultural, forestry, and biological sciences.
  • MENDELU Social Sciences - for research in the social, economic, and related sciences.
  • MENDELU IGA šablona - for MENDELU internal grant projects and projects related to dissertations (without further distinction into research area).

The discipline-specific KMs include questions, recommendations, and methodological guidance tailored to the respective research field. They focus only on topics relevant to your research, such as the management of physical samples, data collection methods, and sensitive data protection. In addition to the subject-specific models, MENDELU DSW now offers a model designed specifically for creating DMPs within MENDELU’s internal grant projects; this KM can also be used when writing a dissertation.

As a result, creating a Data Management Plan is simpler, faster, and the resulting DMP is better aligned with both research best practices and the requirements of research funders.

Advantages of the DSW tool

  • Instructive questionnaire and coverage of all important topics.
  • Choose from options, simple Yes/No answers, prompts.
  • Creating DMP without tedious text writing.
  • Ability to generate DMP in various formats (PDF, MS Word, HTML).
  • Sharing DMP in various modes (reading, comments, editing) with colleagues and project partners.
  • Saving DMP and the ability to return to the project at any time.
  • Practical advice, instructions, links and notifications when filling in questions.
  • Ability to assign comments on solutions to responsible persons.
  • Setting tasks that need to be completed.
  • Preview of the final version of the document at any time during filling in of the questionnaire.
  • Tracking the history of versions and changes when sharing.
  • FAIR metrics for better orientation in good data management practice.
